International
Women’s Day An online event to launch the creation of a web based resource of Indian Women Abroad beginning with the DC area. Beginning 8th March 2003 on the occasion of International Women’s Day we will begin to present individual Indian women and their work. The resource which will be a work-in-progress can be viewed online as the building blocks are put into place. The online event will demonstrate the power of the internet as a communication tool, the power of a virtual community firmly rooted in the ground and will also give us an experience of how the two can be successfully leveraged. Video-conferencing facilities and other online partnerships for this are being explored and we expect to bring to you some new indigenous technologies developed in India. The online event will have two sections:
SECTION ONE: Women will be invited to participate based on word-of-mouth referrals of their work by friends, family and/or colleagues. We will present individual e-profiles for each woman included. This does not (As is often presumed) exclude the home maker and women who do volunteer work and social service, and who do not work for a salary. Individuals who
are not already on the web will get the help they need to create an electronic
profile. Each invitee participant will need to email: 1: A brief resume or descriptive paragraph about yourself 2: A self portrait or photograph. 3: Three scanned jpeg images of your artistic work especially in the case of performing and visual artists. For those who do not have any electronic images for
items 2 and 3. The Editor Or SECTION TWO: Personal Tributes (Open to all men and women) Is there a woman in your life that you would like to honour. This will be a Tribute Section where we will post short descriptions of, or messages for Women in our lives who we admire and who have made a difference to us. This could be spouses, mothers, grandmothers, aunts, nieces, sisters, friends, teachers etc. any woman whose contribution to your life you would like to publicly acknowledge. Those who wish to participate in this section will need to: 2. A Luncheon Meeting. (For
participants e-profiled.) Organised by www.outofindia.net in collaboration with sponsors. Announcements of the location and details of the programme will be emailed to individual participants. 3. An exhibition of
photographs on the theme: "Women of India". Padma Shri Rajan Devadas veteran DC based professional
