Kaveri—devoted
daughter and indifferent wife, nominal bank employee and secret
fantasist—writes a book published to critical acclaim. Then she begins
getting anonymous email… The letters are not threatening as much as
insinuating, and an irrationally frightened Kaveri
flees from them. A chain of misfortunes follows - the collapse of her
marriage, the death of an uncle under mysterious circumstances, the
corruption of a cousin... It also brings about the climactic tragedy –
the devastation of the one person whose love for her is absolute.
Sometimes
indomitable, sometimes friable, Kaveri, a
woman of considerable (and dangerous) charm, lives not at all wisely.
Lies are her stock-in-trade by her own admission, and she lies as glibly
to herself as to the world. To her own loss and, as it happens, the
destruction of those she loves. Fallout is about love—the kind of unquestioning love 'that has no rhyme or reason, no word or symbol, but just is'. Can any good come of such love? Is it even moral?
The mood
is edgy, sometimes feverish, but enlivened by
Kaveri's mordant tongue and underscored by her vivid observation
of acts of human frailty and human strength.
